Best Design Agencies in Chicago (2026)

12 Chicago design studios doing standout work in 2026, from small cultural specialists to long-established multidisciplinary firms

Introduction

These 12 design agencies are the Chicago studios doing consistently strong multidisciplinary work in 2026, across identity, editorial, environmental and digital design. Chicago has one of the oldest design communities in the US, and its studios still do much of their best work for museums, universities, publishers and civic bodies.

The Society of Typographic Arts, founded in Chicago in 1927, is still the city’s main design organisation, and its STA 100 competition is a useful guide to local talent. Chicago winners in 2026 include Span, Firebelly Design, Hour, One Design Company, Studio Blue and Studio Malt. Newcity’s Design 50 for 2026 named the partners of Span, Field of Practice and Hour among the people shaping Chicago graphic design. The studio scene is also shifting: Bright Bright Great merged with Sure Thing Studio in May 2026, and Field of Practice and One Design Company were Fast Company Innovation by Design finalists for a joint identity.

Every studio here has an active Chicago office in 2026. Strategy-led brand consultancies sit on our separate branding agencies list, so this page leans towards studios that design across print, space and screen. The list runs in no fixed order of merit, since the right choice depends on your brief, budget and how you like to work.

What to look for in a Chicago design agency

Start with the mix of work in the portfolio. Many Chicago studios built their practice on cultural and civic clients, which shows in strong typography, publications and exhibition graphics. A corporate identity that has to roll out across hundreds of applications needs a firm with production depth, such as VSA Partners. Small studios such as Hour or Normal tend to suit museums, publishers and architects.

Ask who will do the work. Several studios on this list have fewer than ten people, and some, like Studio/lab, bring in specialists from a wider network for each project. That can work well, but it is worth knowing in advance who will design, who will build the website and who will manage print or fabrication.

For signage, exhibitions and wayfinding, check the studio’s record with fabricators, architects and accessibility requirements, and ask for photographs of finished installations rather than renders. Local juries are a reasonable shortcut when building a shortlist. The STA 100 and Newcity’s Design 50 both reflect what Chicago designers rate in each other’s work.

Finally, look at how the studio handles files and feedback. Identity projects produce many rounds of logo options, type tests and mock-ups, and they end with guidelines and master files that the client must be able to find years later. Agree where final assets will live, and how comments and approvals are recorded, before design starts.

How Fabric helps design agency teams

Fabric gives a design studio one workspace for its files, client feedback and reference material, with AI search across all of it. The setup for designers keeps working files, type specimens, photography and client decks together in shared folders that always show the latest version. Files sit in Fabric’s cloud drive and stream on demand, so large image libraries and print-ready PDFs take no local disk space.

Finding past work is often the slow part of a design job. Search works by meaning across documents, images and PDFs, and colour search finds visual assets by shade. Similar search takes a selected image and surfaces related work by composition, colour and subject, which helps when pulling references for a new identity. Early-stage thinking can go on a canvas that embeds Figma files and video next to images, as described in using Fabric for moodboards.

For review, clients can leave threaded comments on any file through a shared link without creating an account, and annotations add highlights and comments to PDFs such as proofs and guideline drafts. Drawing directly on images is listed as coming soon. There is a wider comparison in the best design feedback tools.

At hand-off, a folder of master files and guidelines can be published as a web page with password protection, and it updates when the source changes. The brand guidelines use case covers this in more detail. On Team plans, self-writing docs can keep a page for each client with decisions, deliverables and open items drawn from meetings, Slack and the workspace.

Password protection is included on Pro and Team plans, and self-writing docs on Team plans. See plans for teams.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best design agency in Chicago?

There is no single answer, as the right studio depends on the brief. On 2026 recognition, Span, Field of Practice and Hour were all named in Newcity’s Design 50, and Span, Firebelly Design, Hour, One Design Company, Studio Blue and Studio Malt all had STA 100 winners. VSA Partners is the most established firm for large corporate programmes.

What is the difference between a design agency and a branding agency?

The line is blurred, but design studios usually make the work itself across print, exhibitions, signage and websites, while branding agencies tend to lead with research, positioning and naming. Many Chicago firms do both. For strategy-led specialists, see our list of the best branding agencies in Chicago.

Which Chicago design studios work with museums and cultural institutions?

Hour, Normal, Span and Studio Blue do much of their work for museums, galleries and universities. Clients across these four include the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the Intuit Art Museum and the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum.

What is the STA 100?

The STA 100 is an international communication design competition run by the Society of Typographic Arts, which was founded in Chicago in 1927. Chicago studios with 2026 winners include Span, Firebelly Design, Hour, One Design Company, Studio Blue and Studio Malt.

Do Chicago design studios build websites as well as design them?

Some do. Bright Bright Great and One Design Company have in-house development teams, Span includes programmers, and Hour has a developer on staff. Smaller studios may design the site and work with an outside developer, so it is worth asking at the start.
