Why mangroves
Mangroves are some of the hardest-working trees on the planet. They grow in the shallow water along tropical coastlines, and their tangled roots do a lot at once: they hold shorelines together, soften the blow of storms, trap carbon in the mud beneath them, and give fish, crabs, and birds a place to breed.
They also keep coastal communities going. Across East Africa, families rely on mangrove forests for food, work, and income. Over the past few decades, development, land clearing, and overharvesting have wiped out large stretches of them. Replanting brings back both the ecosystem and the livelihoods built around it.
How it works
1. You subscribe to Fabric. Every subscriber plants trees for as long as they're subscribed. There's nothing else to do.
2. Local teams plant the trees. Restoration is carried out by community planters on the Kenyan and Brazilian coasts, who are employed to do the work.
3. Every planting is recorded. Each site is mapped with GPS coordinates, satellite imagery, and drone footage. Planters document their work on mobile devices, with photos, video, and field sensors capturing survival rates and biodiversity.
4. The forests are watched over. Sites are monitored for three years, so problems like illegal logging get flagged and the trees stay in the ground.

GoodAPI connects Fabric to the planting projects and handles the tracking and reporting.
Veritree runs the on-the-ground verification in Kenya: the mapping, monitoring, field documentation, and audits. Field data is checked internally against project plans and then reviewed by independent auditors.

How do I know the trees are real?
Every planting is geotagged, photographed, and independently audited by our partners, and each tree is recorded so it can't be counted twice.
What happens after the trees are planted?
Each site is monitored for three years to make sure the forest survives and isn't cleared.
Why mangroves instead of other trees?
They protect coastlines, support local livelihoods and marine life, and store a lot of carbon for their size. Few trees do as much at once.
